Hakeem Rahim is a nationally recognized mental health Speaker, Advocate & Entrepreneur known for his dedication to transforming mental health stigma. In 2012, Hakeem began speaking openly about his 18-year journey with bipolar disorder. Through his speaking and advocacy work, Hakeem has spoken to law enforcement officials, individuals with mental illness and their family members and to over 30,000 middle school, high school & college students. He is a certified National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) In Our Own Voice speaker and the NAMI Queens/Nassau Let’s Talk Mental Illness TM Presenter.
In March 2014, Hakeem testified on Capitol Hill in front of the Energy and Commerce Congressional Committee where he shared his experience living with bipolar disorder. In 2016, Hakeem testified in front of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and participated in the Senate Summit on Mental Health as a speaker and panelist. He has been featured in major news outlets for his advocacy work including USA Today. In April 2016, Hakeem was featured in print and television ads as part of New York City’s ThriveNYC Mental Health Awareness Campaign.
Hakeem is President and CEO of I Am Acceptance, Inc, a 501 (c)3 non-profit organization that focuses on decreasing the stigma of mental illness, promoting mental health and ensuring mental wellness for all. He is also CEO and Owner of Live Breathe, LLC. Through Live Breathe, LLC, Hakeem offers mental health speaking engagements and professional development workshops.
Hakeem graduated from Harvard University with a BA in psychology and Teacher’s College, Columbia University with dual masters in psychological counseling. Hakeem also has the distinct honor of being the first African American male valedictorian in Uniondale High School’s history.
